| One of the most often asked question from a visitor at our field is, "How do I get started in this hobby?" I hope to answer that, and the other questions that usually follow that one, right here. |
|---|
|
The First Step: ASK any Flightmasters Club Member/Pilot or take an Information Brochure. The brochure is free and it briefly states what we are all about. |
|
How much does it cost? A used ready to fly Trainer Airplane will cost around $300. Hobby shops usually have these models for sale and there are frequently for-sale models posted on the bulletin board at the flying field from individuals. You can also "build" your model from a kit. |
|
What Next?
It is tempting to take your model to the nearest open field and try flying for the first time on your own.
DON'T DO IT! YOU WILL CRASH YOUR AIRCRAFT!
Powered models are not toys and trying to fly one for the first time without the help of an experienced pilot can not only be disastrous, it can be dangerous! Get with an experienced pilot/club member at the field or sales people at the hobby shops can recommend pilots in the area who can help you. Flying a model aircraft is not as easy as it appears. |
|
OK ... Then What?
We highly recommend that you join the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) as soon as possible. The AMA provides liability insurance for model aircraft pilots. You must be an AMA member before flying on your own at Flightmasters field or any other AMA chartered flying field. The AMA annual membership fee is $58 for an "Open" membership which is the most common. There are other categories such as Youth, Family or Introductory and these memberships are available without the monthly magazine (Model Aviation) at a reduced rate. An AMA membership application can be downloaded at: www.modelaircraft.org or just Click the Link from our Home Page. |
|
Now that I've done that ... What's Next?
Now you can start flying your aircraft with your instructor's help. As a student pilot you will be our guest at no charge - BUT, your instructor/club member must be present with you at the field. Then after your first solo you will have 30 days in which to join Flightmasters club if you wish to continue flying with us. The FlightMaster's annual club membership fee is $50. |
Again, don't be shy. Feel free to ASK any pilot/club member at Flightmasters field or visit any of the
hobby shops (addresses in Information Brochure). We will be glad to help you get started in Model Aviation.
