The August 1955 Issue of Model Aviation

I mentioned last month that I was going to ask permission from the Publications Department of the AMA to reproduce, on these pages, the complete issue of the August 1955 "Model Aviation" magazine. That permission was granted and this, beginning on the next page, is the first installment of that issue. Since we are dealing with the cover and inside cover, I will include three pages this month.

My reason for wanting to publish one of the "Model Aviation" magazines of that era is because I suspect that very few of our "younger" modelers have any idea of the extent of "partnership" that existed between the United States Department of the Navy, The Aviation Industry as a whole, The Federation Aeronautique Internationale and The Academy of Model Aeronautics. We as modelers enjoyed a great blessing having those organizations partnered with us. Without their participation, and generosity, the AMA and we modelers might very well have suffered a tremendous hardship. Modeling, as we know it today, might not have come to be.

Of course, the U.S. Navy and the Aviation Industry were looking for aviation enthusiasts as prospective aviators, sailors, engineers and employees. An amazing quote from within this very magazine states: "The Navy interest in this project is logical, when you consider that 74% of its aviators are former modelers."   If you went to a "Nationals" contest between 1948 and 1957 you would find it hosted by the U.S. Navy and located on one of its Naval Air Stations!

Have you ever wondered why there is a "Carrier Event" at the "Nationals"?   Maybe now you know the answer.

I hope you will want to read this issue. Except for this page only, I have scanned the images in High Resolution, condensed them for quicker loading, and provided a "clickable" image on each page so that it can be enlarged to twice its original size for easy reading on smaller monitors. Simply "Left click" the image and it will open in a new window. Click on the "full page" icon in the top right corner of the new window. On some browsers this will provide the "full sized" image ... on other browsers you may have to move the mouse over the lower right corner of the image itself and hold it there for a few seconds. An "enlarge" icon should appear that can be "clicked". Clicking on this icon will enlarge the image to full size. To get back to the normal page, just close the window.

I hope you enjoy this issue of "Model Aviation" ... and Remember as you read, "you are living in 1955"!
