Second Annual Kansas City Swap Meet Excursion

About two hours before daylight on 17 January, 2009, Bill Womble began picking up Walt Moore, Dwaine Mayhew and Cecil Collum for the trip to Kansas City to attend the RC Swap Meet.   The trip took about five hours of driving but would have been a little shorter if the navigator hadn't fallen asleep and let us miss a turn at Neosho, MO.

The time passes rapidly on these trips due to the camaraderie and discussion that frequently get very deep. Much valuable aviation information is exchanged and there was a great deal of singing and story telling.  We break up these trips with stops at various locations for refreshments, etc. After what seemed to be only a short time, we exited I-435 in Kansas

City and made our way to the Exhibition Hall where the swap meet was already in full swing.

There were literally HUNDREDS of airplanes in the hall, either built-up or still in the box.   It's impossible to name even a fraction of what was available but one should have two or three different planes in mind when he goes to the meet.

We each went our own way in the hall and tried to see everything on every table, all the while trying to watch for different things others had mentioned.

Those present at the February club meeting will be aware that it was suggested we do something about the mud in the parking lot after a rain or snow. Ron (chairing the meeting due to Josh's absense) asked for a discussion and after all was said it seemed that all present were in favor of putting down SB-2 or gravel.

Ron asked for a motion and one was made, seconded and carried by a unanimous vote to get it done. Ron appointed Bill Womble, Don Jones and Giles Helbling to a committee to take care of it.

They did the job admirably!   Twenty One Tons of gravel was delivered last Thursday, and on Monday at about 0900, Don Jones pulled through the gate with his Kubota tractor with front loader and he, Bill Womble, Walt Moore and Cecil Collum spread the gravel over the worst mud holes in our parking lot.

Cecil writes: "What a transformation!  One can actually walk in that area without getting mud all over his shoes!  Now I can park my vehicle in the lot without carrying home 100 pounds of clay each time."

Don did an outstanding job of leveling the gravel and deserves a big THANK YOU from the club.

As a side note, a Mister Shipman with the Arkansas Highway Department stopped by and told Womble and Collum that they would fit right in with his Highway Department crews, judging from the way they leaned on their shovels.   (I wish someone would have taken pictures of this!)

As Cecil suggests...

A Big Thank You

goes to the committee and to Bill, Cecil, Walt and Don.   Great Job Guys!!
