During the "Kenny Roberds Memorial MDA Fly-In", I was approached by a club member who asked me, "Who was Kenny Roberds, I never met him." I proceeded to "bend his ear" for a few minutes. As I was driving home from that event and mentally checking our club roster, I realized there are several who became members too late to know Kenny. So, for all of you who never had the chance to meet Kenny:

Kenny was just a very nice person! He was friendly, outgoing, courteous and greeted all with a smile. He came to the field often, was a very accomplished musician as well as RC pilot and was ever ready and willing to help anyone who needed help. Many fledgling RC pilots asked Kenny to fly their airplane to "trim them out". Not only was Kenny an RC pilot, but he flew Full Scale airplanes, Ultra-Lite's and Helicopters.

Kenny filled several club officer positions and was Club President for several years in a row. He was an active member of our club and helped with the obtaining and outfitting of our present flying field.

But, mostly, He was my friend! And I think everyone who knew Kenny could say the same thing.

THE KENNY ROBERDS MEMORIAL MDA FLY-IN 2008

The 2008 Kenny Roberds Memorial MDA Fun Fly was held on 1 Sep 08 with 20 registered pilots and a total of about 35 club members in attendance.

The types of planes present ran the gamut from the ubiquitous Piper J-3 Cub, in various sizes, to the F-22 Raptor by Hangar 9. There were the slow flying World War One planes such as Terry Rollins' Curtiss JN-1 Jenny, fast flying F-22, and 3-D planes such as the Extra, Sukhoi, and Funtanas.

Flying commenced at 9:00 AM and continued throughout the day with planes constantly taking-off and landing. There were several thrilling moments when it appeared that two or more planes were attempting to occupy the same airspace but no accidents actually occurred. High levels of airmanship were evident as pilots skillfully guided their planes safely through the crowded skies.

As is our custom, the fun fly was staged to collect monies for donation to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Flightmasters collected $853. The collections break down as a $500 donation in Kenny Roberds' name by his widow, Susie Roberds, $130 collected by Jeff Mayhew and $200 collected as Landing Fees.

Mrs. Roberds presented two awards to Hardie Jeffries (Best of Scale) and Cliff Littlejohn (Best of Show). The trophies were two very nice engraved acrylic trophies. Congratulations to Cliff and Hardie!

There being no crashes and all airplanes going home in flyable condition, this Fun Fly has to be one of the best. Those not in attendance or flying missed a great day at the field.

Cecil Collum, Club Secretary

Next Club Meeting will be September 14th - 2:00 PM at the Club Field!

Please try to attend.
